World Test Championship (WTC) : How will India Play the WTC Final?
Following the 3-0 Test series defeat against New Zealand, India has lost their top position and slipped to the second in the World Test Championship (WTC) standings. In the third and final Test held in Mumbai, India lost to New Zealand by 25 runs on Sunday resutling in a 0-3 whitewash. It was India’s first defeat since losing the home Test series 2-0 against South Africa in 1999-2000 and also for the first time India have been swept 0-3 in a home series.
Again, India lost a Test series 3-0 for the first time on its own soil
This is India’s 5th defeat in WTC cycle. As a result, the team’s point percentage decreased from 62.82 to 58.33. The team has also dropped to second place behind defending champions Australia. Australia has occupied the first position with 62.50 points.
Border-Gavaskar Trophy
India will now play the 5-match Border-Gavaskar Trophy with Australia. This series is important for both the teams for the top two spots. India were expected to win most of their remaining matches. The team was also expected to enter the WTC finals for the third time in a row. But the situation has changed.
India need to win 4 of their remaining 5 matches to qualify for the finals; Which will be challenging in Australia. Australia, on the other hand, is in good shape. They need to win 4 of the remaining 7 Test matches. New Zealand’s chances for WTC finals have been boosted by a historic series sweep against India. The team is currently in the fourth position with 54.55 percent points while Sri Lanka is third with 55.56 percent points. South Africa is currently ranked 5th with 54.17 percent points. The team is also in the running for the top two spots in the WTC standings. However, the team will have to win the only Test match to be played in Lords next month.

Series left: 5 Tests vs Australia (Away)
By what margin India need to win against Australia to qualify for WTC 2025 final?
If India win the five-match Test series against Australia by a margin of 4-0 or 5-0, then India would have their percentage point above 65 per cent.
In this case, only Sri Lanka and South Africa could breach the 65 per cent PCT.
What if India win the series against Australia by 4-1 margin?
In that case India’s PCT would be 64.1 per cent. But either of South Africa (69.4%) or Sri Lanka (69.2%) and New Zealand (64.3%) could breach India’s PCT of they all their remaining matches in 2023-25 World Test Championship.
What if India lose the Australia series 2-3?
If India lose the series by 2-3, then Australia would finish at the WTC points table above India even if the Kangaroos lose the two-match Test series in Sri Lanka. In this scenario, at least one of South Africa, Sri Lanka, or New Zealand would be above India on WTC 2023-25 leaderboard.
