Jay Shah Takes Over as ICC Chairman Amid Champions Trophy Controversy
Former BCCI secretary Jay Shah today formally took over as the chairman of ICC, the apex body of cricket. His tenure as ICC chairman begins today. New Zealand’s Greg Barclay, who served as the ICC chairman from 2020, ended on November 30. Later, Jai Shah took the charge today.
Jay Shah Became the Youngest Chairman of ICC
Shah holds the record of becoming the ICC chairman at the age of just 36. He became the youngest person to head the biggest organization in cricket. Apart from this, Shah has been all headed the world cricket body as the 5th Indian. Earlier, Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan and Sashank Manohar were at the helm of the ICC. After taking charge as the ICC chairman today, Jay Shah said that he will focus on how cricket can be included in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Shah also said that he will work to make women’s cricket more popular.
The ICC President holds office for three terms of two years each. Greg Barclay of New Zealand was appointed as the Chairman of the ICC in 2020. He was given responsibility again in 2022. The 36-year-old Mr. Shah, who has been the BCCI secretary for the last five years, was the unanimous choice of ICC’s Board of Directors and replaced New Zealand attorney Greg Barclay, who didn’t wish to continue for a third consecutive term.

As the conflict between the BCCI and PCB over the 2025 Champions Trophy has reached its peak, the hybrid model is being discussed. It is said that the Pakistan Cricket Board has agreed to adopt the hybrid model without finding any way. It was the ICC that proposed the hybrid model to the PCB. However, there is no clarity regarding the hosting of the Champions Trophy.
Jai Shah’s Experience in Cricket Administration
Jai Shah, son of Union Home Minister Amit Shah, has considerable experience in cricket administration. He started his journey from Gujarat Cricket Association in 2009. He was played a major role in the construction of world’s largest cricket stadium in Ahmedabad. In 2019, Jay Shah became the youngest member to hold the post of Secretary of the BCCI. He also has the experience of chairing the Asian Cricket Council and the Finance and Commercial Affairs Committee of the ICC.
