Chandrayaan-3’s Vikram Lander is Going to Get a New Neighbor, that will Make a Historic Landing on the Moon on March 6

In 2023, ISRO’s Chandrayaan-3 mission created history by landing the Vikram lander on South pole. India became the first country in the world to do so. Now, two years later, the Vikram lander is going to find its new neighbor. Domestic space company Intuitive Machine’s Athena lunar lander is going to land near the moon’s south pole on March 6. This mission will mark a milestone in lunar exploration, as Athena will also join the spacecraft that is preparing to land on the lunar surface.

The Athena lander is part of NASA’s Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) program and the Artemis mission, which aims to establish a long-term human presence on the Moon. Athena will land near Mons Mouton, about 160 kilometers from the Moon’s south pole. Its main objective is to study the lunar surface and search for water ice, which could prove to be a vital resource for future human missions. The lander carries a drill and two rovers. It also carries a ‘Harper’ drone called Grace. This drone will be able to make small jumps on the lunar surface and potentially even jump into a permanently dark crater.
