A Post Office will be Opened Every 3 km in the Country to Strengthen Rural India’s Financial Inclusion
During the Modi Government, post offices have going through the significant changes, aiming to become a crucial part of rural India’s financial Inclusion particularly for women. Minister of State for Communications Chandra Sekhar Pemmasani shared this information with the Rajya Sabha. He also said that more than 10,500 new post offices have been opened in the last 10 years and 90% of them are in rural areas. He highlighted that post offices are being transformed to support rural communities financially.The government aims to set up a post office in every 3 km area in the country.
More than 5,000 of the new post offices are located in areas affected by left-wing extremism. Mr. Pemmasani explained that no post office employee has lost his job in the last 5 years. He informed that at present there are more than 1 lakh 65 thousand post offices in the country where about 4 lakh 50 thousand employees are working.
Technical Modernisation to Improve Postal Services
The government has invested Rs 5,700 crore in IT modernisation to enhance postal services. This investment includes providing 1.4 lakh mobile phones, 1.4 lakh thermal printers, and 3 lakh biometric devices to postmen. These tools enable postmen to function as mobile ATMs, and go reach every household, especially those of housewives.
Post Office Empowering Women Through Export Centres
PM Modi envisioned post office as export centres. The government has designed one product for each district to support self-help groups and empower women economically. This initiative has led to the creation of Dak Ghar Niryat Kendras (DNKs) in each district. Due to the success of this scheme there are currently over 1,000 DNKs across India. By facilitating the export of innovative rural products worldwide these centres are providing continuous support for rural women to improve their livelihoods.
