Afro-Asia Cup: India and Pakistan Players will Play Together After 17 Years!

The Afro-Asia Cup will start again. After two decades, the series between the African XI and the Asian XI will begin soon. This news has been confirmed by the African Cricket Association (ACA). However, the dates for the series have not been finalized yet. If the Afro-Asia Cup is played, then the selected players from India and Pakistan will play in one team. Apart from this, players from the Asian continent like Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, UAE may get a chance in the Central Asia XI.

Afro-Asia Cup Set to be Revived After Almost Two Decades

The Afro-Asia Cup will start again after two decades. The African Cricket Association (ACA) has appointed a six-member Interim Committee at its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Saturday. These will shape thr Afro-Asia Cup series. The dates of when the series will be played will announced on the advice of the committee.

AC Interim Chairman Tavengwa Mukuhlani said, “The Afro-Asia Cup will provide the necessary financial support to the organization apart from cricket. The result will be very beneficial for both parties. We have discussed this with the Asian Cricket Council. African countries are in favor of restarting the Afro-Asia Cup.”

When did the Afro-Asia Cup was First Played?

The first edition of Afro-Asia Cup series was played in South Africa in 2005. India hosted it in 2007. In 2009, Kenya hosted the third edition of the series. But it could not be organized due to various reasons.

The 3-match series of the 2005 Afro-Asia Cup ended in a 1-1 draw. The last match of the series was cancelled. Meanwhile, the Asia XI had players like Virender Sehwag, Shahid Afridi and Sanath Jayasuriya. It was led by Inzamam Ul Haq. The team had great players like Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Ashish Nehra.

In 2007, Asia XI won the series 3-0. The team had Pakistani players like Shoaib Akhtar, Muhammad Asif and Muhammad Yusuf. They played in the same team as India’s Zaheer Khan, Yuvraj Singh, Mahendra Singh Dhoni, Sourav Ganguly and Harbhajan Singh.

Players from India and Pakistan will Play in One Team

If the Afro-Asia Cup starts, players from India and Pakistan will have the opportunity to play in the same team. Since January 2013, India and Pakistan have only faced each other in ICC and ACC tournaments. No bilateral series is being played between the two countries. India has not visited Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup.
