How to Get Refund If Paid to Wrong UPI Address?
- If you and the person you sent the money to are the customers of the same bank, you can usually get your money back within 24 to 48 hours. If it’s a different bank account, it takes longer to get the refund.
- As per the guidelines issued by the Reserve Bank of India, first try to contact the sender directly. Ask him to return the money and send the details of the transaction. If the issue is not resolved through the person’s cooperation, you can file a complaint with the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI). Submit transaction details and necessary proofs. NPCI will investigate the transaction.
- Inform your bank about the error in the transaction as soon as possible and submit the necessary details. This allows them to initiate a chargeback for a refund.
- You can also call the toll free number 1800-120-1740 for assistance in case of wrong UPI address transactions.
How to File the Complaint to NPCI?
- File a complaint with the payment system used i.e. Google Pay, Phone Pay or Paytm.
- Go to the NPCI website at https://www.npci.org.in/ and fill the online form under the “Dispute Redressal Mechanism” section.
- Provide required details including Transaction ID, Virtual Payment Address, Amount Transfer Receipt, Transaction Date, Email ID and Mobile Number.
- Select “Incorrective Transferred to Another Account” as the reason for your complaint.
If the complaint remains unresolved, first report the issue to the third party application provider, second to the payment service provider bank, third to the bank branch and finally to NCPI. If the problem is not resolved even after a few months, complain to the Ombudsman of the Reserve Bank of India, who hears cases related to digital transactions.
