Nowadays, no financial transaction can be done without PAN card and Aadhaar card. Similarly, we also need documents like voter ID card and passport for other work. Aadhar card
After the death of a person, the family of the deceased should take special care to ensure that his Aadhaar card is not misused. Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has no procedure to cancel or deposit Aadhaar card of the deceased. But relatives of the deceased can lock his card.
How to Lock Aadhar card?
- First of all, go to the myAadhaar portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in .
- After that click on ‘Generate or Retrieve VID.’
- Now generate VID number by entering the 12 digit Aadhaar number and captcha code.
- Now go to MyAadhaar portal again and click on ‘Aadhaar Lock/Unlock’ option.
- Here you have to enter your Virtual ID, Name, Pin Code, Captcha code and OTP.
- After that select the consent box and submit your information.
- After this process is completed, your account will be successfully locked.
Besides, if the deceased was availing any government scheme or subsidy and it is linked to Aadhaar, then the concerned department should be informed about it. So that the deceased person’s name can be removed from the scheme.
PAN Card
From filing returns to opening accounts, PAN card is required for many tasks. But, after the death of a person, his family members should deposit the PAN card of the deceased and for this they have to contact the Income Tax Department. PAN card is linked to bank account.Therefore, all accounts of the deceased should be transferred to another person’s name or closed before surrendering the PAN card. After depositing PAN card, it may be difficult to do this.
Voter ID
- A person is entitled to vote only through his voter ID card. After the death of a person, his family members can cancel the Voter ID card of the deceased.
- To cancel the Voter ID, one has to go to the Election Office and fill Form-7. After which this card can be cancelled. Deceased’s death certificate may be required to cancel Voter ID.
Passport
Unlike the Aadhaar card, there is no procedure for canceling or depositing a passport. But each passport is valid only for a certain period of time, after which it expires. Therefore, family members should keep the passport of the deceased until its validity expires, so that no one can misuse it.
Driving License
Each state has different rules for issuing and canceling a driver’s license. While there is no central system for surrendering a deceased person’s license, heirs can contact the Regional Transport Office (RTO) for specific procedures. Also can process the transfer of ownership of any vehicle registered in the name of the deceased.
