Instagram Creators Now Have A New Way To Make Money From The Platform
Instagram users will be able to subscribe to receive special content from their favourite influencers in the near future. The functionality, which will first be available in the United States, is already available in a trial phase. In a blog post, the firm stated that it is testing the new functionality with a small number of artists and that more influencers would be added to the platform in the coming weeks. Only ten creators are now participating in the early test, including a basketball player, an olympian, an astrologer, and others.
Instagram users will be able to pay a monthly subscription to view subscriber-only material from creators they follow through the new programme. Exclusive Lives and Stories from your favourite creators will be included in this “exclusive” content. Subscribers will receive a purple badge next to their username, indicating that they are a subscriber to the creator. There are several price categories, ranging from $0.99 per month (approximately Rs 73) to $99.99 per month (about Rs 7,400). According to Ashley Yuki, the product’s co-head, these rates will be set by the creators, and Instagram will not take a portion of the money until at least 2023.
Basketball player Sedona Prince, Olympian Joran Chiles, and astrologer Aliza Kelly are among the ten creators participating in the early test. “I’m excited to start building tools for creators to make a career doing creative work and to put these tools in more creators’ hands soon,” said Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of parent company Meta, in a Facebook post.
Subscriptions are “one of the finest methods” for influencers to have a steady income from Instagram, according to Instagram CEO Adam Mosseri in another video. According to a report in The Verge, several influencers are already charging followers to be joined to their “Close Friends” list, which gives them access to exclusive stories that aren’t available to all of their followers.
Instagram isn’t the first app to implement a system like this. Instagram’s rival, ByteDance’s TikTok, launched a similar tool in 2021, while Twitter unveiled a Super Follows feature last year that allows authors to provide additional subscription content on Patreon or Substack.
