Instagram is now using AI technology to verify that teens (aged 13-17) are not posing as being over 18. The process estimates age based on facial images. Age is also estimated based on user behavior and activity on the app. If Instagram has any suspicions, it can ask users for facial scans or age verification. Once the truth comes out, such accounts will be converted to teen accounts. According to Meta, this technology was developed with complete privacy in mind. Instagram will not share this data with anyone and the scans will be deleted within a few minutes.
What is a Teen Account?
- Teen accounts are private by default, that means their profile and posts are not visible to everyone. In addition, there are also limits on private messages (DMs).
- Teen users will only be able to receive messages from people they already follow or are already connected to.
- Sensitive content, such as fight videos or posts promoting cosmetic surgery, will also be less visible on Instagram.
- According to Meta, if a teen spends more than 60 minutes on Instagram, they will receive a notification.
- In addition, a sleep mode will also be enabled, which will last from 10 pm to 7 am. During this time, all notifications will be turned off.
