The hassle of toll plazas will end for people travelling on National Highways. Now you won’t have to stop or wait in long queues anymore. The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) is soon going to introduce a new GPS-based toll system instead of FASTag. The system will use satellites to measure the distance travelled by vehicles and deduct tolls accordingly.
According to media reports, the technology was earlier scheduled to be rolled out from April 1, but due to some issues, it will be implemented from May 1. Initially, it will be tested only on selected highways. Speaking at the GNSS-based toll workshop held last year, Union Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari said, “We are continuously working to make the lives of citizens easier, administration cleaner and services faster.”
No Need for FASTag Anymore
With the introduction of this new GPS-based toll system, there will be no need for FASTag. This GPS-based toll system will work on satellite technology, which will determine the distance covered by the vehicle and based on that, the toll amount will be deducted directly from the bank account. However, this system will initially be implemented only on select national highways and will work with FASTag. Customers can instantly change the GPS toll if they wish.
What is GNSS?
GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System, a technology that tracks the location, speed and travel time of vehicles through satellites. With the help of this technology, the toll collection system is currently being changed in India.
FASTag vs GNSS
The FASTag system in operation so far is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology. In this, the FASTag is affixed to the vehicle’s windshield and scanned at the toll booth. Whereas, GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System) uses satellite tracking to monitor vehicle movement and calculate tolls based on distance traveled, eliminating the need for physical toll plazas.
