ISRO Launches India’s First Analog Space Mission in Leh to Train Astronauts
The Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro) launches India’s first analog space mission in Leh, Ladakh. This is an important milestone in the country’s space exploration efforts. The aim of this mission is to solve the challenges that astronauts will face in living on other planets in the future.
“India’s first analogue space mission kicks off in Leh! This mission will simulate life in an interplanetary habitat to tackle the challenges of a base station beyond Earth,” the space agency announced on X. The mission was launched with the support of ISRO’s Human Spaceflight Centre, AAKA Space Studio, the University of Ladakh, IIT-Bombay and the Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council.

Due to Ladakh’s unique geological features that closely match the surface of Mars and Moon, the Analog mission will be based there. Its cold and dry conditions and high altitudes provide the ideal environment for testing technologies and strategies required for long-duration space missions. This effort is part of India’s broader ambitions to expand its capabilities in human spaceflight and interplanetary exploration. This effort also includes the Gaganyaan program which aims to send Indian astronauts into space.
During the mission, explorers will engage in various activities designed to simulate life on other planets. These include accommodation design evaluations, structural analysis studies, and psychological assessments of the effects of incompatibility on crew members. Observations from this mission will provide important information on future habitat design for both the Moon and Mars environments. By simulating the challenges of living in space while on Earth, scientists hope to ensure the safety of astronauts during space travel. The aim of this mission is to inspire future generations with space science and exploration along with increasing scientific knowledge.
