The Prime Minister’s Office has issued an important directive to the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). From now on, biometric verification through Aadhaar card will be mandatory for all new SIM card connections. This means, people will now have to show their Aadhaar card to get a SIM card and their identity will be verified biometrically.
Scams are on the Rise
Many people are buying SIM cards using fake documents and using them for fraud and other crimes. In view of this problem, the Prime Minister’s Office has directed the Department of Telecom to make Aadhaar card verification mandatory for all new SIM cards.
New SIM Card Rule To Prevent Fraud
The aim of this measure is to prevent SIM card fraud related crimes. Earlier, people could get a new SIM card on the basis of any official document like voter ID card or passport. But now as per the new rules, biometric verification through Aadhaar card has been made mandatory for all new SIM cards. Without an Aadhaar card, the shopkeepers can no longer issue SIM cards to anyone.
