The Indian government has introduced strict traffic laws for 2025, increasing fines for serious violations by up to 10 times. The new penalties aim to increase road safety and reduce accidents. In response to the increase in reckless driving, drunk driving, and traffic violations, the government has taken strict measures to ensure compliance with the law.
The government will introduce increased penalties for traffic violations from March 1, 2025. The changes include higher fines and the possibility of jail time for serious offenses. The move aims to increase road safety and reduce reckless behavior among drivers.
New Traffic Rules and Penalties
- Drunk Driving: Earlier, the penalty for driving while intoxicated was Rs 10,000 or imprisonment for 6 months. Repeat offenders can face a fine of Rs 15,000 and imprisonment for up to 2 years.
- No Helmet: Earlier, driving without a helmet was punishable by a fine of Rs 100. But now, a fine of Rs 1,000 will be imposed and the license will be suspended for 3 months. Even if you do not wear a seat belt, you will be fined Rs 1,000.
- Using a Mobile Phone while Driving: The fine for using a mobile phone while driving will be increased from Rs 500 to Rs 5,000.
- Lost Documents: Driving with an invalid license or without insurance will now attract a fine of Rs 5,000 and Rs 2,000 respectively, which will also attract a three-month jail sentence and community service. Repeat offenders will have to pay a fine of Rs 4,000 for violating insurance regulations.
- Without a Pollution Certificate: Rs. 10,000 and/or six months imprisonment with community service.
- Reckless Driving: A fine of Rs 1,000 will now be imposed for dangerous speeding on a two-wheeler and Rs 5,000 for dangerous driving or racing. A fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed for not giving way to an emergency vehicle like an ambulance.
- Not Giving Way to Ambulance: If an ambulance or emergency vehicle is stopped, a fine of Rs 10,000 will be imposed.
- Minor Driving: If a minor is caught driving, a fine of Rs 25,000, 3 years in jail, and the vehicle registration will be cancelled.
