What to Do if Water Spilled on your Laptop?
Turn Off your Laptop Immediately
If you have spilled water on your laptop’s keyboard or screen, then the first thing you should do is to turn off your device immediately. Unplug your laptop, then press and hold the Power button for 5 seconds or longer until it shuts down completely. If you take time to turn off your laptop and leaving it on while it’s wet, then could cause a short circuit or other serious damage to your laptop.
If you or your clothes are wet, then be careful and don’t unplug your laptop directly from the wall, as you could electrocute yourself. Instead, locate the switch or circuit breaker for the outlet you plugged your device into and then turn it off there.
Remove the Laptops Battery
Try to remove the battery, even after you’ve turned off your laptop.
- Turn over your laptop so the bottom is facing up and then find the battery latch.
- Slide the latch switch to the opposite side and hold it open until the battery releases.
- If you see the battery is wet, then it’s likely damaged and no longer safe to use. You should immediately replace it.
- In Some laptop models, to access the battery require to unscrew the backplate. If this is the case with yours, then you can call an expert for your help.
Remove all Plugged-in Devices
Unplug any USB drives, dongles, or accessories such as a mouse or charger from your laptop.
Dry and Drain your Laptop to Fully Air Dry
It is important to dry your laptop as quickly and carefully as possible if you spilled liquid on it.
- First, you can take a microfiber cloth to dab any excess liquid from your device. Make sure to dry the keyboard, vents, trackpad, and USB ports.
- Then drain your laptop by turn it to upside down, place it on a towel or a microfiber cloth, and let the water drain out.
- For best results allow at least 24 hours for your computer to fully air dry.
Reassemble the Laptop
After two days put the battery to the laptop and see if your laptop working fine. If laptop is turning on, test everything such sound, screen, usb ports ect. If it does not turn on or you notice distortion in the display or sound, or any of usb port or wifi is not working, then you will need to take your laptop to a professional laptop liquid damage repair service.
What Not to Do?
- Don’t turn on your laptop in the middle of the drying process. Give it at least 24 hours to dry.
- Never use any cloths with lint to dry liquid. Using clothes with lint can cause further damage to your laptop and make things even worse.
- Do not shake your laptop to get rid of excess liquid. Shaking will allow water to get deeper into laptop and damage your internal components.
- Do not place your laptop in rice, otherwise it will create more problems if the rice gets stuck in and around the components of your laptop.
- Do not leave your laptop out in the sun or use a hairdryer because too much heat could damage your device.
