‘No Detention Policy’ Lifted by Central Government
Now, If the students fail in the 5th and 8th annual examination, the they will not be automatically promoted to the higher class. They will be declared as failed and have to study in that class again. Because the previous ‘No Detention Policy’ has been lifted by the Central Government on Monday.
Re-examination will Arranged for the Failed Child
Students who did not pass in 5th and 8th class will have an opportunity to retake the exam in 2 months. If they successful in the second time then they will be promoted to the upper class. Otherwise, they will study in the same class again. Union Ministry of Education has brought a new emphasis on this. According to this, the failed child will not be expelled from the school till the 8th grade. School Education and Literacy Department Secretary Sanjay Kumar said that this decision was taken to improve the quality of education of children.
According to the Ministry of Education, school education is the subject of the state. So states can take special decisions regarding education. Under the new policy of the central government, the class teacher will identify the weaknesses of the students and discuss them with their parents and give special input if needed. This new law will be implemented in over 3,000 central schools of the country. It consists of Central School, Navodaya School and Sainik School. Already 16 states and 2 Union Territories (Delhi and Puducherry) have ended the no-detention policy. The Principal will make a list of students who have not progressed from 5th and 8th standard and monitor their academic progress. Examination and re-examination of such students will not be based on their memory. A child will not be expelled from school until his basic education is completed. Such a decision has been taken by the central government for the improvement of Academic performance.
What is No Detention Policy?
The No Detention Policy is part of the Right to Education Act 2009. The government brought this law to reform the education policy of India. In 2018, a bill was passed in the Lok Sabha to amend the Right to Education Act. According to this, it was said to conduct regular examination for 5th and 8th class children and re-examination in 2 months for failing children. The bill was passed in the Rajya Sabha in 2019. The decision to continue or abolish this policy was left to the state.
