UPI Payment: UPI ID Containing Special Characters will be Rejected by the System from February 1

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) recently changed the rules and made it clear that now no special characters can be included in the UPI ID. The platform has clarified that after February 1, 2025, UPI Ids or transaction IDs containing special characters will fail the payment. If your UPI ID contains special characters then you need to change it immediately.

UPI ID Containing Special Characters will be Rejected by the System

A circular was issued by the NPCI on January 9, it said about the new law. It is clearly stated that now UPI transaction ID can be only alphanumeric. That means it can only contain numbers and letters and no special characters should be part of it. If any Transaction ID contains special characters, it will be rejected by the system.

Edit your UPI ID & Remove Any Special Characters Before February 1

Even popular payment apps generate their own shadow UPI ID, but users have the option to create their own custom UPI ID or change the existing one. If your UPI ID has any special characters and you get the option to edit it, then remove the special characters immediately. Additionally, selected payment apps will change their app ID to their current one.

The new rules come into effect from February 1, meaning you can’t make UPI payments if you don’t change on time. If repeatedly your UPI payment fails then it may be due to your UPI ID or Transaction ID contains special characters.

For Example : If your phone number is 1122334455 and your bank is HDFC Bank then the payment app will automatically generate your UPI IDS. For example, 1122334455@okhdfcbank can be your ID. Now payment cannot be made through it and only Ids like 1122334455okhdfcbank are valid. Apart from this, if you are going to make a custom UPI ID, you have to change it as well.
