In September, Meta-owned WhatsApp banned more than 85 million ‘bad’ accounts in India after the policy violations came to light. This information is given in the monthly compliance report of social media platforms under the new IT Act 2021. Between September 1 and 30, the company banned more than 85 million accounts, and more than 16 million of them were actively banned before any reports from users.

The mobile messaging platform has over 60 crore users in India. The company has received 8,161 grievances from the country and action has been taken on 97 of them. Actions taken refer to complaints where WhatsApp took remedial action. According to WhatsApp, two orders were received from the Grievance Appellate Committee and action was taken accordingly.

The company said that “we will continue to be transparent in our actions and will include information about our efforts in future reports.” A team of engineers, data scientists, analysts, researchers and experts in law enforcement, online security and technology development has been appointed to oversee it.
